DSS Consulting was established in 1997 to provide administrative support in terms of bargaining labor contract terms and formulating procurement systems for small school districts. Initially, DSS was organized into 4 practice departments- Facilities Planning, Information Technology, Procurement and Systems, and Contract Negotiations. By 2005, founders started reducing their involvement, due to which new leaders from other consulting organizations were recruited to make management decisions, creating a need for new marketing strategies. DSS Consulting underwent a significant shift from a purely practice-oriented functional structure to a hybrid structure. This posed several challenges, such as lack of clear direction and communication from upper management about the necessity of reorganization into cross-functional, customer-focused organization, resulting in uncertainties among DSS consultants about new organizational strategy, their roles in new structure and future of DSS. Moreover, due to lack of support from other organizational members and the passive response of Meg following the DSS reorganization, Chris’s team held negative perceptions of Meg’s decisions and questioned the organization’s leadership and decision-making.

1. Identify the key issues in the case study. 

Following key issues are identified in the case study:

  • There was a lack of clear communication and misalignment between Meg Cooke (Chief Operating Officer) and Chris Peterson’s (leader of Southwest region team) understanding, strategic priorities and expectations. Although Chris tried to give an update on the project’s status and team efforts, Meg still decided to cancel the project. It reflects ineffective communication and misalignment between the project’s goals and organizational goals.
