In 1970s, India pursued a closed economic model which denounced the Foreign Direct Investment in India. This led to the mushroom growth of local companies. Likewise, HCL Technologies was founded in 1976 by Shiv Nadar and fellow engineers.
Vineet joined this venture in 1985 and took over as President in 2005. By then the challenges that HCL faced were results of various changes that took place in the macro environment of the country. First of all, India had opened its landscape for Foreign Direct Investment and the return of companies like IBM intensified competition. Secondly, the customer demands had changed from hardware to more integrated IT and software services. Thirdly, many foreign firms took advantage of the lower costs in India by building strategic partnerships but HCL did not position itself on price.
