Case Analysis for Ron Ventura at Mitchell Memorial Hospital

2. Discuss the specific issue and secondary issues and how they relate. Support your analysis and explain your reasoning.

The primary issue as apparent from the case is of dealing with the hard personality of Ron Ventura who despite being an extraordinary surgeon is a sharp tongued and impatient person who often ends up upsetting his colleagues and subordinates. Not only this, he often disagrees with the administrative policies and openly criticizes them in front of everyone. Andy Prescott is responsible for deciding whether it is in the long term interest of the hospital to renew the contract of their star surgeon and give a signal to the entire staff that it is absolutely acceptable to treat other people in a rude manner. On the other hand, if Andy decides to put his foot down and doesn’t renew the contract of Ron then he will have to deal with the financial setback that will come as a consequences because Ron has the strongest physician referral ratings in the industry so patients who come to the hospital because of Ron will then be diverted to other hospitals. At present, the dilemma of Andy Prescott is to decide between the ideals of organizational culture that he and the top management are trying to establish or to consider the business side of issue. Managing both aspects is essential because hospital can’t run purely on ideals and continuing with a weak culture would result in low employee morale and high employee turnover.

3. Describe the role perspective contributing to your solution, identifying strengths and weaknesses.

As Andy Prescott, the future of Mitchell Memorial Hospital lies in the decision of whether to renew Ron Ventura’s contract or not.

If contract is renewed

If contract is not renewed

Strengths

  • Business will grow further and the hospital will not have to worry about business development targets.

  • Performance standards will increase as Ron is great at his job and allows opportunity of learning for fellow surgeons.

Weaknesses

  • Employee morale will decline, particularly those who have been mistreated at the hands of Ron.

  • Employee turnover will increase because for them organizational culture is not acceptable.

  • The top management will set a wrong example that it is acceptable to mistreat other people if you are good at your job.

Strengths

  • Andy will be able to set an example that cultural norm of collaboration and team work is the primary focus, which cannot be overlooked.

Weaknesses

  • Business will be affected as caseload will reduce drastically as several cases are referred on the merit of Ron rather than of the hospital itself.

4. Describe alternatives and the pros and cons of these.

One possible alternative available to Andy is to renew the contract of Ron Ventura but only for the next one year and that too on the condition of improving his attitude towards fellow colleagues and subordinates. Before granting the contract renewal, Andy should carry out a sitting with Ron where both should discuss the feedback provided by other employees of the hospital. Andy has been avoiding the discussion of Ron’s poor attitude; however, it is the right time to discuss before contract renewal as Ron himself has mentioned the need of adopting better communication strategy and to be more patient with fellow workers.
