Case Analysis for A Day In The Life Of Alex Sander Driving In The Fast Lane At Landon Care Products

1. What behaviors by Alex are having the greatest impact on the 360 degree data provided by the coworkers? Which of these behaviors are positive and which are negative?

Behaviors, having the greatest impact on 360 degree feedback of Alex can be summarized as follows.

Aggressive

Hs aggressive and wants to take everything in his hand, so he needs results in one way or other. He wants commitment. He pushes workers beyond limits and never bothers to listen to them nor cares about feedback. That leads to burn outs and hostility. On the positive side it, by being aggressive he builds an entrepreneurial spirit and get the work done.

Work-life balance

Entrepreneurial spirit pushes his to go beyond normal work routine and so he wants form his employees. This entrepreneurial spirit causes over stretch and disturbance in employees’ social life, causing them to work overtime and even forgo their vacations. This is a serious cause of burn out and arousing concerns among employees.

Stubborn

He never bothers about others evaluation and never cares and listens to employees’ suggestion. He is overwhelmed with spirit of doing work and, this attitude, he also expects from employees. Addition to that, with his aggressive attitude he never scares standing alone and asking hard questions but caused employees to be bit reluctant to comment on his in the feedback process.

Assessment

He is thought to be too honest in assessment, in other words, blunt, and never caring about feelings of others. In addition to that, he seems to lack a praising behavior that is one of the most important factors in motivation of employees.

Impatience and perfectionist

He is quite impatience, and want quick results. At one time, he took away task given to one of the employees saying it will take more time making his understand and at other instance in meeting with team.

Few of these factors can be counted as positive and negative at the same time like aggression. But in assessment, stub born attitude and no work life balance goes against his attitude of being positive.

2. What does the 360 degree data tell us about Alexs likely career success? If you were Sam Glass, would you spend more time in helping Sander progress at Landon?

This 360 degree feedback provides a clear picture of his personality. He is an aggressive and an entrepreneurial personality, which wants control and results in one way or other. With this attitude, he is courageous enough to stand alone make the hard decision, blunt enough to take anyone down and committed enough to work overtime and even give up vacation. So, for a business this kind of personality is always a plus point. However, this type of personality raise concerns, he can be successful in his career, but he needs to be flexible enough to change others and himself. With this attitude, he can achieve results for few times but not always. These overstretch and hectic working style will soon cause burnout among employees that might lead to increase turn over or employees turning against. Time is gone, when you can force anyone to do anything, now employees need control, intrinsic motivation and value been given to them and their opinion. So with this attitude his survival is not very bright.

Yes, indeed I would have spent some time to his counseling because business always needs such dedicated personalities to prosper. He, among employees, is somewhat praised. But, he can certainly prove to be a gem as if he becomes more flexible in his approach. This flexibility can be achieved through continuous mentoring and counseling.

3. Will Alex do something differently on the basis of the feedback? What do you think Sam Glass will do?

I don’t think that Alex will improve and do differently as per feedback. If we probe his personality and attitude, he never cares about the feedback, nor does he give importance to it. In conversation with Glass and with his neighbor, he mentioned it time and again that he never believes a 360 evaluation and only what motivates is money. In addition to this, if we look into his resume, he was active in entrepreneur club at MIT. Linking with his MIT days, he has an entrepreneurial mindset and also plans to start up new business, as a second choice, where he will have his say. He is good at taking work from employees, but not a leader and is quite arrogant and stubborn with that attitude. So, he might leave if over pushed, but he will carry his way forward.
