Dealing with problem people is an art that very few individuals can master. One must be able to empower themselves to effectively manage such problematic individuals and ensure that their performance is up to par. The following ideas and rules can be applied from a general perspective; however, situations may vary, and, therefore, these might not be applicable.

The most important thing in my opinion is to remain calm and maintain your composure when dealing with such individuals. Problematic individuals are usually distracted and unconcerned about what is expected from them. Hence, they lack the desire to work and contribute positively. This can be rather frustrating for employers, supervisors, subordinates or co-workers for that matter. Individuals are prone to burst up given their behavior. Therefore, it is essential to maintain composure and remain calm when dealing with such individuals. The moment an individual loses their cool, they might take actions that they will regret down the road. The best way to do this is to take a deep breath, count till ten. Counting till ten enables us to zone out of the anger and think rationally and more practically.

Secondly, in my opinion I agree with the author on the fact that all individuals have motivational energy. For some this motivational energy surfaces, while for others it is difficult to excavate and bring out. It is crucial for us to engage in some analysis of the individual’s psychology, personality and character to better understand what motivates them. The qualities associated with the drive and passionate pursuit regarding something might not be evident at the workplace but may be highlighted in other aspects of life. Managers must be able to understand the same and not declare individuals as stubborn based on certain traits that they may portray but not possess. Human behavior is a science in itself, and it is no doubt one of the most difficult areas of study.
