In the year 2016, the co-founder of the company came up with a very different strategy that said that there must be an enhanced environment rather than coming up with an appraisal in the salary of the employees. They believe in offering non-monetary incentives rather than coming up with such offers that only cover bonuses and salary appraisals of individuals and have nothing to do with the culture of the workplace. An individual who has to spend nine to ten hours daily in an office deserves to be served with the best facilities; otherwise, this will affect his work, and this will ultimately result in the downfall of the company. Orix's approach to employee motivation and engagement is unique, and it focuses more on coming up with a friendly environment. This fact cannot be ignored that an employee can work more effectively if he is offered better engagement skills as compared to the other companies. The workforce can only work effectively if the company offers friendly relations. Orix's approach, most importantly, focused on filling out this gap so that there can't be any force or action that could become an obstacle to the growth of the company.

Following questions are answered in this case study solution:

  1. Imaging that mining is an industry of interest to you and matches your skills, would you like to work for Orix? Why or why not?

  2. Assess Orix’s approach to employee motivation and engagement. How does it work? What are the pros and cons of a system like this?

  3. Why does scaling up present a dilemma for the founder? What are the potential problems that could arise with continuing the current system as the company grows and the industry heats up?

  4. Develop an action plan for Ramnath. What should the employee management systems look like few (i.e., 3, 5, 10) years from now, assuming high growth with the upturn? What should Ramnath start putting in place now to prepare the organization for these systems?

Case Study Questions Answers

1. Imagining that mining is an industry of interest to you and matches your skills, would you like to work for Orix? Why or why not?

If mining is an industry of interest for me and matches my skills, I would definitely love to work for Orix because, in my point of view, the most important factor that counts a lot for any individual or especially an employee, when pursuing his professional career is pursuing the job or skill that is linked with his interest and understanding that is where he will be willing to serve with more dedication, devotion and interest. That is the reason why I would love to work for Orix, as they propose an environment that is best suitable for their employees. The most important factor that creates all the misunderstandings is the lack of communication, or one could say the gap of communication that makes it harder for the employees to understand the cause and expectations of the company from its people and in this way, the bond of trust can never be formed between the two forces.

Hence Orix's approach, most importantly, focused on filling out this gap so that there can't be any force or action that could become an obstacle to the growth of the company. It is the best option to work for the industry, which is in one's own interest; this is what a person, especially an employee, should look forward towards. This fact cannot be ignored that an employee can work more effectively if he is offered better engagement skills as compared to the other companies. Everyone should work on serving in an environment that is best suited for their personal growth and mental peace rather than running after a six-digit salary package or so. Skills are only polished once one steps into the working class of his own interest.

2. Assess Orix's approach to employee motivation and engagement. How does it work? What are the pros and cons of a system like this?
