3. Shared Planet Initiatives

Starbucks has a vision of producing sustainable coffee that is served sustainably, and has launched a number of Shared Planet Initiatives to achieve its long-term vision. Starbucks encourages sustainable supply of coffee. It has invested in climate-resilient coffee tree varieties, and is also providing access to low-interest financing through the Global Farmer Fund (Atzori, et al., 2018). It has also launched the ‘Next Gen Cup Challenge’, whereby it aims to eliminate use of 1 billion single-use plastic straws. This is because plastic also adversely affects the animals and the sea life. The company has also launched LEED-certified stores around the world. Up to now, Starbucks has committed more than USD 140 million in renewable energy development to power their stores, considering the rise in the global warming and increase in the level of the pollution (Neilson & Pritchard, 2007). The company is also working to support women and families in coffee and tea growing communities through Starbucks Foundation origin Grants focused on income-generating activities to diversify their income and improve their living standards. Hence, it can be considered as an attempt by Starbucks to give back to the community.
