Fintech – a billing and payment processing service for the alcoholic beverage industry is faced with the need of choosing a cloud service and technology provider to be able to meet the evolving demands of its clients. While the management views the movement towards cloud technology to be beneficial and useful for other resources and services as well, the management is also aware of the potential dangers and risks of the movement towards cloud technology. The case describes the evaluation that fintech undertakes for three providers of cloud technology Amazon, Google, and Microsoft. While each providers offers important services that fintech requires for client demand fulfillment, each service provider comes with unique and important differences. The case allows an in-depth understanding of the evaluation process from business as well as ICT needs and challenges, and allows building of understanding of comprehensive and integrated organizational processes and structures for successful strategy implementation and goal attainment.

a. How would a move to the cloud make it easier and/or more profitable for Fintech to provide large volumes of selected data to its clients?

For customers, cloud technology would allow access of data from anywhere. For the company fintech, this would be more profitable as it would allow the company to rent the service from providers, instead of making upfront investments. This in turn would further add to benefits for the company as it would allow fintech to simultaneously train employees and workers for the new technology and prepare them accordingly while launching the service. The company would at the same time be able to transfer cloud computing towards the updating of the infrastructure within the company. 

b. What technical challenges does Fintech face in offering the new service?

One technical challenge that the company faces is that of security. Cloud technology will expose the company to increased levels of threat from infiltrators, which can compromise the internal systems within the company and expose the company as well as client data. This means that any vulnerability would impact all stakeholders involved – from providers to suppliers to users.

Another challenge was that of availability. In addition, the company was also faced with the challenge of data integration across the company using existing infrastructure to be able to support the move towards the adoption of cloud technology. Availability largely refers to the access that the company would have to the providers of the technology, and how readily would it be made available to the customers.

c. What business challenges does Fintech face in offering the new service?

Business challenges for the move towards the adoption of the cloud technology include resource constriction largely. This would largely include the challenge of change management, and introducing new training for the employees for updating skill sets. Moreover, this would also include the challenge of updating existing infrastructures and ICT networks within the organization to accommodate the new technology. Largely, this would also entail a leadership challenge for successful implementation of the change along with successful communication of the same internally as well as externally within the organization.
