The Thurgood Marshall High School in Great Falls, Illinois, which is the subject of this case, is generally considered the best educational institution in the community since it makes use of innovative pedagogical practises to educate its students. There have been issues raised about interpersonal and group behaviours in the city as a direct consequence of the opening of a new high school branch in the area. Specifically, there has been a lack of open conflict resolution. The housing system at Thurgood Marshall High School was devised in such a way that school divisions and the housemaster can adhere to it without having to worry about the department heads intervening in any disagreements that may arise among students. The case study that will be provided below features an illustration of an intergroup conflict in the form of a disagreement between the department heads and the housemasters.

Following questions are answered in this case study solution:

  1. Consider what are the problems facing David Kane. How might you prioritize them? What action steps might you recommend to deal with them?

  2. What is your evaluation of Dr Parker’s handling of the situation at Thurgood Marshall High? What would you have done as Dr Parker?

  3. What kind of managerial skills might have helped Dr Parker to resolve the conflict?

  4. As Mr. Kane, what would you do to tackle the conflict between Drobna and Chase?

Case Study Questions Answers

1. Consider what are the problems facing David Kane. How might you prioritize them? What action steps might you recommend to deal with them?

There was a lack of trust and a collective element among the institution's administrative personnel, as a result of these issues. The Thurgood Marshall High School principalship was given to David Kane because of his proven ability to deal with the most challenging situations in education. The school's image as a supplier of inner-city education must be restored, and Kane must do just that. Mr. Kane's troubles are similar to those experienced by Dr. Parker, but their severity has risen significantly. Initially, Mr. Kane would have to deal with the issues that TBH faced when Dr. Parker was principal. Before he could do anything else, Mr. Kane had to settle a dispute that had arisen between the department heads and the housemasters.

In addition, Mr. Kane had to deal with the intrusion of the outsiders, who had no business being there and had instead caused issues for the office workers. To get to the bottom of this dilemma, he'd have to take drastic measures. Because of the rigorous security measures put in place to keep out intruders, Mr. Chase and Mr. Kubiak, in particular, had issues with the doors of the residences being kept locked. People worried that locking up their homes and abandoning their unique identities would undermine their sense of self-sufficiency and self-determination. In addition, Mr. Kane had to fix the scheduling issues that continued under Dr. Parker's leadership. Mr. Kane had to come up with a timetable that would not clash with the department heads and housemasters.

To find out why Mr. Wilkins' absence rates were so high, Mr. Kane had to investigate the absence records at his residence. Not only was there a high percentage of student dropouts at the home of Mr. Wilkin, but there were several additional disciplinary issues as well. Kane had to deal with Harvey, who was threatening to bring TBH's certification difficulties to light in front of the Council on Accreditation. He also had to deal with the issue of open positions at the school and take immediate action to fill them as fast as possible. As a result, Mr. Kane had to adopt and perform all the tasks required of him as TBH's leader. As the sole owner of TBH, Mr. Kane was now responsible for addressing these issues.
